About Model UN

Model United Nations is a very popular extracurricular activity at Meridian! In 2023-2024, the competitive organization had more than 170 members! Model UN gives students the opportunity to work on their research, public speaking, and diplomacy skills. Middle school and high school members can participate in conferences in the central Texas area, and high school students will also have the option to participate in a Houston travel conference. See Conferences.

Weekly Meeting Information

For the 2024-2025 academic year, Middle School and High School participants will have different weekly meeting days:

  • Middle School will meet on Tuesdays from 4:10 p.m. - 5:15 p.m. (first meeting September 17)
  • High School will meet on Fridays from 4:10 p.m. - 5:15 p.m. (first meeting September 13)

Students who attend after school tutoring and/or student clubs and group activities must report directly to After School 6-12 in the Mays Cafe when their activity is over. Families may park in the student parking lot to pick up their student (see map).

High School Building: students may be picked up from the high school lobby only if their ride is on time. Students that have to wait any amount of time must report to After School 6-12.

Students may not wait outside, in the middle/high school lobbies, or exit the Mays building through any other exit.

If you will not be picking your student up immediately after their activity, please register them for After School 6-12. After School 6-12 ends at 5:45 p.m. sharp and late fees start to incur at 5:46 p.m. Late fees will be charged even if you are not registered for After School 6-12. Learn more about registering for After School 6-12 and late fees.

Mandatory Information Meeting

For all new and returning prospective members (students) and their parents/guardians.

Please join us via Zoom on Monday, September 9 at 6:00 p.m.

Missed the Mandatory Information Meeting?

Both the student and their parent/guardian should watch this recording before the student's first regular Model UN meeting. Questions? Please email the MUN sponsors.

Student Commitment Expectation

Students who do not participate at the same level and frequency in their competitive extracurricular activity negatively impact the group’s performance, morale, and culture.

  • For competitive extracurricular activities such as Model UN, all students are expected to attend weekly meetings.
  • For competitive extracurricular activities, such as Model UN, students who know they have a regular conflict are encouraged to choose between conflicting activities before registering.

Eligibility

Members must maintain the following types of eligibility:

  1. Character in Good Standing
  2. Financial
  3. Academic

See Eligibility.

Lettering

Lettering is an honor reserved for high school students who participate at the highest level in their extracurricular or co-curricular activity. Lettering requirements include:

  1. Grade Level Requirement (9-12)
  2. Academic Eligibility Requirement (must maintain passing grades)
  3. Character in Good Standing (consistently abides by the Student/Parent Handbook at the Model UN Terms for Participation)
  4. Financial Good Standing (does not owe the school money), and
  5. Participation Requirements (see below).

To meet the Participation Requirements in Model UN for 2024-2025, high school students must either:

1) Participate in a minimum of two conferences in one school year as a high school student and win a specific award (see below) in one of those conferences.
Awards that qualify must be equivalent or more distinguished than: Best Delegate; Honorable Delegate; Distinguished Delegate: Outstanding Delegate; Commendation, Position Paper Award. (A Chair Award or certificate acknowledging participation is not considered distinguished and would not qualify a student for lettering.)
2) Or, participate in a minimum of four conferences over a period of two consecutive school years in high school at Meridian.

In addition to conference participation, the student must also meet the following standards each year:
  1. Must attend all Model UN meetings, unless excused in advance by the Advisors
  2. Must be well prepared for conferences; and
  3. Must maintain an impeccable standard of behavior while representing themselves and our school at MUN conferences.
As of the 2025-2026 academic year, Model UN participants must accomplish all lettering requirements within one academic year. The option to accomplish the requirements over two school years in high school will expire with the 2024-2025 academic year.
